Meet the Early Careers Team
The day kicked off with a warm welcome from the Early Careers team, Serena and Sara who gave us a deep insight into the firm, what they look for in applications and common mistakes that candidates usually slip up on.
Top Tips & Takeaways
Unfortunately, a lot of candidates don't succeed during the written application stages due to them not fully answering the questions. Their top advice:
Read the question carefully
Make sure you answer every part
Be clear and structured
Give solid examples to back up your points.
They also emphasised three key skills that you should be demonstrating throughout the recruitment process:
Commercial Awareness – You must be keeping up to date with what is going on in the business world and think about the impacts that it has on clients and law firm operations.
Critical Thinking – You should be able to break down problems logically and think critically when going about your work.
Analytical Skills – You should demonstrate the ability to dissect complex issues and find clear solutions.
What Stood Out the Most?
Aside from gaining these useful career tips, members were also able to network with current Herbert Smith Freehills First Year Alumni to learn more about their experience with the firm, and their experience on the 1st year programmes and gain novel insights into what a career in law entails.
